Wedding Photography | Ask a Friend
With the average Wedding Photographer charging over £1,000 you might be tempted to ask a friend or relative to take your wedding photographs. Free wedding photography may sound tempting; however it's not without its pitfalls.....
If you are working with a restricted budget, asking a friend or relative to take the wedding photographs is one method of saving money. However before making this decision it is import to consider the potential pitfalls of this money saving idea.- Your friend or relative might agree to take your wedding photographs and then spend the next few months worrying about the prospect (it can be a daunting prospect to some people).
- What would happen if the photographs they took were of poor quality, or worse still they somehow managed to delete them? Would this affect your relationship with them?
- What if they forgot their camera, the batteries ran out, or their camera stopped functioning? Professional wedding photographers will carry spare equipment to cover these eventualities.
- Professional photographers invest in high quality cameras, lenses and accessories which are able to produce excellent results in the majority of lighting situations. Unless your relative or friend is a keen amateur with fairly deep pockets, chances are their equipment (and therefore the quality of their photographs) may not be as good as those produced with professional equipment.
- Unless your friend or relative is a 'would-be' wedding photographer, they won't enjoy your wedding in the same way as the rest of your guests. That might be a little unfair.
However if you really are on a tight budget, your friend or relative is happy to oblige, and you promise that you won't fall out with them if the photographs don't turn out, then asking a friend or relative can be an excellent way of saving money. In the near future we will be running a series of articles on 'photographing a wedding' with tips from some of our professionals. These tips might be useful source of reference for your friend or relative.
